With its small-scale farm structures, extensive grazing and frequent use in landscape management, sheep and goat farming in Germany is a particularly animal- and environmentally friendly form of animal husbandry. However, the number of commercial farms in Germany has been declining for years. The keeping of sheep and goats is currently characterised by low profitability and a difficult marketing situation in most regions of North Rhine-Westphalia. The sheep and goat breeding associations of North Rhine-Westphalia and approx. 30 farms would therefore like to show ways for a future-proof and sustainable economic activity. For this purpose the current economic situation including the marketing channels will be determined. Subsequently the farms will be examined for sustainability on the basis of a few selected criteria in accordance with the DBU project 'The Sustainability Code of Agriculture'. Farm-specific innovation strategies based on a SWOT analysis and the sustainability analysis are developed.
