Satellite based crop yield estimation to support official agricultural statistics (SatAgrarStat_PLUS)
Project
Project code: JKI-PB-08-1296
Contract period: 01.10.2020
- 30.09.2023
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
The purpose of forecasting and calculating crop yields in agricultural statistics is to describe domestic agriculture and to draw up supply balances. They are an essential basis for assessing the agricultural market situation and evaluating the common agricultural policy. For procedural reasons, these results are currently only available at district or state level. Results are usually not published before spring of the following year.
The aim of the project SatAgrarStat_PLUS is to test the possibilities of remote sensing based methods for estimating crop yields based on Sentinel-2A/B satellite data in the concrete application case of official agricultural statistics. The project builds on the scientific and technical findings of the SatAgrarStat project. The aim of the project is to further develop the spatially explicit crop yield estimation (retrospectively) for winter wheat, winter rape and spring barley, and to set up a new module for winter barley. For this purpose comprehensive in-situ data is acquired during the growing season in six federal states of Germany over a period of 3 years. Analyses are carried out at field level firstly. Thereafter, results are compared with official yield statistics by spatial aggregation at district level. Finally, the project will investigate potentials and limitations of yield forecasts for the above-mentioned crops using the long-term average of the daily global solar radiation. Based on these results, a concept for the application of satellite data in official agricultural statistics is elaborated.
