Continued development of the nitrogen balance for agriculture in Germany
Project
Project code: JKI-PB-08-1316
Contract period: 01.01.2021
- 31.12.2023
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
Nitrogen balances have been used for many years by science, agricultural and environmental policy as an instrument for describing the nutrient situation. The surplus of the N balance is documented as an indicator variable over time and used to characterize potential risks such as water pollution with nitrate from agriculture. The overall nitrogen balance and its components area balance (balancing of crop production), stable balance (balancing of animal production) and the biogas balance (balancing of the production of biogas in agricultural biogas plants) are calculated annually by the Institute of Crop and Soil Science of the JKI in cooperation with the Institute of Landscape Ecology and Resource Management of the University of Giessen and published by the BMEL in the monthly statistical reports. The methodology of nitrogen balancing is continuously developed.
