Good robustness of healthy pigs makes it easier to avoid tail docking. in addition to husbandry, feeding and herd management, genetics have an impact on te health status of the pigs. Animal welfare is one of the highest relevance throughout the breeding stage. Therefore, animal welfare characteristics that can be edited by breeding should be identified and includet in the breeding programs of the rural herdbook breeds of the Baden-Württemberg Pig Breeding Association. The breeds German Landrace, Large White, Piétrain and Duroc as well as crosses from the parent breeds are included.
