Project code: EIP-Agri-2022-SA-LGMBVPN
Contract period: 01.01.2022 - 31.12.2024
Budget: 660,063 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: farming equipment, biodiversity, policy and nature conservation/management

Field mice can cause enormous economic damage to agricultural land. Early detection of infestation pressure and the associated timely control enables sustainable and resource-conserving agriculture. A conflict in field mouse control using rodenticides (chemical control agents) is the simultaneous presence of field hamsters. These animals are threatened with extinction worldwide and belong to the strictly protected species in Germany. Therefore, a fast and cost-effective method to detect field hamster burrows by drone will be tested. This enables the implementation of targeted protection measures and, in perspective, creates a basis for future demands or incentive components for the protection and conservation of the field hamster. The aim is to develop a fully automated evaluation tool that enables a fast and accurate analysis of field mouse and field hamster occurrences on the agricultural land flown over.
