In sugar beet cultivation, choosing a variety that is tailored to the region is an important pillar of disease and pest management in integrated crop protection. Choosing the right variety increases the yield significantly and secures it in the long term. Sugar beet cultivation in Rhineland-Palatinate can currently only be maintained with varieties that are resistant to new pests and pathogens, because other means or methods have not yet had a sufficient effect. The joint project SONAR (variety selection for sustainability and resilience) is developing a digital variety advisor that is intended to offer decision-making support for farmers. The digital variety advisor is created as a web application. With independent, freely available and scientifically sound advice, it guides the farmer through the diverse range of sugar beet varieties. The variety advisor includes monitoring and other data from the trials and the location. As a result, the variety recommendation also takes into account the climatic, agricultural and infestation-typical peculiarities at the cultivation site.
