Breeding resilient apple and pear varieties for organic cultivation - ÖON (BioResiObst)
Project
Project code: 2822OE060C
Contract period: 15.03.2024
- 14.03.2029
Budget: 127,739 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: climate change adaptation, seed and planting material, organic farming
The BioResiObst research project aims to reduce the use of plant protection measures in pome fruit cultivation by breeding durable resistant apple and pear varieties and to optimize organic fruit breeding through innovative measures. During the project period, the evaluation of results from already existing cross-breeding populations of the project partner apfel:gut e.V. is to be intensified. For future breeding work, the methodology is to be improved by comparing the pursued breeding goals with the actually inherited characteristics of parent varieties on breeding clones. In addition, genetic resources in existing variety plantings of traditional apple and pear varieties that are not subject to plant protection will be evaluated for the most relevant traits for organic fruit production during the project period. The results are to be used to better assess which of these accessions, which have not been used or have been used very little for breeding, have a particularly high potential for variety development for organic cultivation. The best varieties will be crossed and the first parent varieties recommended for organic pome fruit breeding.
