Process for energy and fertilzer production from waste water and waste from palm oil industry: Exemplary evaluation of the sustainability of a renewable resource
Project
Project code: vTI-AB-08-TB
Contract period: 01.08.2005
- 01.08.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
High amounts of waste water and solid waste (empty fruit bunch) from palm oil mills pollute the environment, especially by the green house gas methane from the waste water ponds. In the frame of the German-Indonesian cooperation in the field of biotechnology a new process for the utilisation of the waste water (biogas, energy) and the empty fruit bunch (compost) was developed. In the BMBF project the process is realized in a demonstration plant in practical scale.
An essential criteria for the application of a resource is the sustainability of the production (environment pollution, material and energy flow, social compatibility, economic efficiency). Palm oil is used as an example to investigate and to evaluate these criteria based on practical data.
