Purpose of research: Basic research
Fluorescence techniques are used in plant physiological research with the aim of characterizing specificities of the photosynthesis process and their changes when plants are exposed to stress situations. However, the common methods are not stress-specific and do not allow differentiation between multiple stresses. In this context, new techniques have been developed such as Laser induced fluorescence (LIF) or Fluorescence–Imaging (FI) showing promising potential for stress sensing in plants. The aim of our project therefore is to further develop and validate LIF and FI techniques for use in early detection and differentiation of biotic and abiotic stress factors in barley and sugar beet. Furthermore the potential of combining the information obtained with different sensors will be exploited in order to establish a basis for sensor fusion which could contribute to more effective and efficient breeding programs and crop management.
