Collaborative project: Development of a recirculating irrigation system with reduced phytosanitary risk in greenhouses - subproject 2

Project

Project code: 2815502611
Contract period: 01.03.2013 - 28.02.2015
Budget: 302,285 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research

A new electrolytic disinfection procedure for sustainable water reuse with reduced phytosanitary risk in greenhouses should allow a customized water disinfection by means of sensor-dosed addition of effective disinfectants. These disinfectants are produced from the existing constituents of the water by anodic oxidation (AO), without using a membrane and without additional chemicals. The following agronomic and phytosanitary issues need to be examined: How does the composition of the ions in the nutrient solution change after a long time with influence by the anodic oxidation (AO)? Is there an accumulation of plant-damaging ions such as Cl-ions? What effect the cleaning system have on plant growth, yield and product quality, in particular to the formation of internal substances? How should the cleaning system integrate in a recirculating hydroponic cultivation technology process? At which point will start the disinfection and what amounts of water are expected and can be implemented? Which influence does the cleaning process have on the inactivation of plant pathogens? How the release of active oxygen and chlorine can be used to combat viruses? What is the effect on the process energy requirements and water turnover?
