Broadening of genetic variability for resistance improvement of vegetable crops in Brassica oleracea by means of chromosome addition
Project
Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-1173
Contract period: 01.01.2005
- 31.12.2008
Purpose of research: Basic research
The project shall open pathways to enhance the genetic variation in vegetable crops of Brassica oleracea. This concerns resistance characters to parasitic nematodes, fungi and viruses. For this purpose, radish (Raphanus sativus) as genetic resource with its known high resistance potential will be exploited. Addition lines of single radish chromosomes in cabbage will be developed. This will be done by means of in vitro procedures, molecular and cytogenetic methods. Evaluation of resistance expression und the development of markers for selection will be carried out. The genetics of resistance characters will be analyzed. The project puts an emphasis on the development of alternative resistance strategies for cabbage. They are directed against soil-borne plant-parasitic nematodes, gaining increased importance in organic farming of vegetables. The results of project will be used to avoid pesticides in vegetable production and to obtain a resistant crop for natural plant protection (trap crop principle). The project will broaden the genetic basis of vegetable crops.
