Cleistogamous oats to prevent infection by smuts (KLAR)
Project
Project code: 2815NA172
Contract period: 01.03.2017
- 29.02.2020
Budget: 94,845 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: Avena sativa
The project aims at reducing the risk of infection by smut (Ustilago avenae) in organic oat seed production and growing. To this end, the genetic variability for cleistogamy, anther extrusion and susceptibility to smut shall be assessed among a panel of 260 oat lines, followed by a genome-wide association analysis. The results will be interpreted in terms of the level of cleistogamy needed to sufficiently reduce smut infection and the potential value of cleistogamy as an alternative to classical resistance breeding.
Phenotyping of the 260 oat entries for flowering characters and smut infestation will be performed at three sites and over three growing seasons. The association analysis will be based on mapped markers (DArT-seq or GBS). Seeds harvested from oat lines representing the whole range of cleistogamic expression levels will be studied for their infestation by smut, in order to depict the effect of cleistogamy on smut infection.
