Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4146
Contract period: 01.01.2008 - 31.12.2012
Purpose of research: Basic research

Durable disease resistance against apple scab and powdery mildew is one of the main objectives in apple breeding. The knowledge about the existence of mildew races, and the occurrence of new scab races that are able to overcome the Vf resistance widely used in the past in apple breeding have forced the search for new resistance sources as well as the development of efficient molecular breeding tools to allow the selection of single apple genotypes carrying combinations of different specific monogenic resistances. The project aims at the identification of alternative scab and mildew resistance sources in Malus, preferably in closely related species as M. sieversii, their genetic analysis and the phytopathological characterization with respect to the race spectrum of the fungal pathogens. Based on the results of these investigations diagnostic DNA markers for the resistance genes are developed which will be applied to marker assisted selection and molecular breeding. The localization of the resistance genes in the apple genome by genetic and molecular mapping strategies will allow a better characterization of the inventory of fungal resistance genes within the frame of biodiversity studies as well as in practical breeding programmes.
