Production processes

Project code: JKI-ZGO-08-4174b
Contract period: 01.06.2017 - 30.09.2020
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: caraway, summer annual production, winter annual production, general combing ability

For caraway production uses of summer annual as well as winter annual varieties lead to an essential enhancement in technology. There exist restricting factors for using annual varieties so far. These are based on the available spectrum of varieties and in particular on the attainable yield and the essential oil content of the caraway fruits. The planned project will be focussed on both weak points and shall reach or exceed the efficiency of biannual varieties by selection of better genotypes out of an improved gene pool. The limit for the breeding material resulting from the planned project is an essential oil content of 5 % in the fruits and a yield of 1.5 t/ha. The breeding material will be selected for summer annual forms, but also for annual forms of caraway suitable for winter cultivation. Efficient lines for the planned project are available from the Dr. Junghanns Company and from Julius Kuehn Institute (JKI). The gene pool of JKI has been created by crossings of summer annual variety ?Sprinter? with varieties and accessions that are biannual but rich in essential oil. Lines developed from this gene pool will be characterized for their productive capacity as regards yield and content of essential oil. The general combining ability (GCA) will be determined by a polycross test for each line. Subsequently, a set of lines with highest GCA will be characterized for productive capacity in a test synthetic designed to clarify chances for a synthetic variety of caraway. Simultaneously the Dr. Junghanns Company will adapt respective cultivation methods with focus on winter annual material. In the year 2016 the project partner Dr. Junghanns Company will install a distilling facility for production of essential oils. This investment is designed, among other species, for the processing of caraway and will be optimized for caraway distillation during project time.
