Collaborative project: Production of wheat containing purple acid phytase A. Subproject 1 (PapAW)
Project
Project code: 2818204415
Contract period: 07.11.2016
- 06.03.2020
Budget: 205,836 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
"In this project the Department of Animal Nutrition of University Hohenheim and the plant breeding company W. von Borries-Eckendorf joined their forces to evaluate possibilities for improved phosphor efficience in animal nutrition. The aim of the project was to create wheat genotypes with higher phytase activities and to evaluate them with regard to their phytate degradation in the digestive system of broilers and pigs.
With marker-assisted backcrossing wheat lines with the HighPhy-gene were created. The phytase activity of this lines was measured and the ones with the highest activity were multiplied for digestibility trials. Unfortunately, the high phytase wheat lines did not increase the phytate degradation in the digestive system of broilers and pigs as expected when compared to a standard wheat with normal phytase activity. Probably the increase in phytase activity derived through backcrossing was not high enough to cause a significant effect in the animal trial."
