Collaborative project: Identification, modification and use of resistance towards significant pathogens of barley - subproject E (IdeMoDeResBar)
Project
Project code: 031B0199E
Contract period: 01.11.2016
- 31.10.2019
Budget: 104,356 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: resistance breeding, barley, BYMV, leaf rust, scald, net type of net blotch
The major goal of IdeMoDeResBar is the maintenance of yield stability and grain quality in barley, which are threatened by various pathogens. This will be achieved by (i) the identification and isolation of novel resistance genes to important fungal and viral diseases, (ii) by the generation of various alleles at two known virus resistance genes using genome editing and (iii) by the deployment of these genes/alleles in practical breeding programs by using modern marker technologies. Each part of the project will be processed by one of the different involved institutions that exhibit a specific expertise in the appropriate professional discipline. The project will contribute to a better understanding of the genetic basis underlying the resistance mechanisms against Barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), Barley mild mosaic virus (BaMMV), leaf rust (Puccinia hordei), scald (Rhynchosporium commune f. sp hordei) and the net type of net blotch (Pyrenophora teres f. teres Drechsler). These results will allow the development of strategies to cope with these pathogens and will sustain therefore the barley production and stabilize barley yields by minimising yield losses caused by fungal and viral pathogens.
