Exemplary demonstration network expanding and improving the farming and marketing of small seed legumes in Germany (KleeLuzPlus)
Project
Project code: 2818EPS025
Contract period: 01.06.2019
- 30.04.2024
Budget: 362,346 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production, production, feed crop production, animal feed, clover, alfalfa, lucerne, crop production, animal nutrition, value chains, other legumes
The demonstration and knowledge transfer network ‘KleeLuzPlus’, aims at expanding and improving the cultivation and utilisation of fodder legumes in Germany. This is promoted by best practice examples and model value chains on working farms. The entire process from cultivation through conservation to utilisation as a protein feed or roughage source for dairy and beef cattle is examined with an on-farm focus. The innovative usages as an alternative protein source for monogastric animals as well as the nutrient transfer within or between farms are shown. The current level of knowledge as well as new findings, are being edited and will be published for agricultural practice, consultation and education requirements. For this purpose, links to current research projects are provided. For illustration and the establishment of entire value chains with fodder legumes, other relevant actors are included in the activity of the network e.g. plant breeding companies, agricultural engineering and ancillary sectors. The network consisting of nine partners in Germany operates within six regional activity centres, where conventional as well as organic farms are involved. Thematic priorities are aligned with regional conditions. Because of the diversity of fodder legume cultivation, an evaluation of the performance of different fodder production systems and where appropriate, their further ecosystem system benefits and services, is vital. Therefore, a comprehensive support and study of the farms is needed to collect yield and quality of fodder data. The data collection and the resulting information is in part, closely connected to a related research project and provides fundamental statistics for the knowledge transfer of the network.
