Differentiation of cod from North Sea and Baltic Sea fisheries by stable isotope and fatty acid analysis

Project

Project code: MRI-MF-08-188 1050 KABELJAU
Contract period: 01.10.2019 - 31.12.2020
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment

Legal requirements for the labelling of fishery products also include an indication of the fishing area. Due to endangered stocks, there have been considerable quantity restrictions for cod in fishing areas in the North and Baltic Seas for several years. Exploited quotas carry the potential risk of declaring a false origin. In the interest of consumer protection but also of species protection and sustainable production, methods for the proof of origin at trade level are needed. In addition to DNA-based approaches (SNP markers) for the differentiation of cod from the North Sea and Baltic Sea, some time ago our own analyses of the stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen showed promising potential in this respect. The aim of this project is to test the stable isotope approach using a representative number of current cod samples. In order to improve the differentiation of sea areas, especially within the Baltic Sea, for which there exist different catch quotas, the fatty acid composition is additionally recorded. Both methods are able to map possible food-based differences. If necessary, multivariate methods are used to determine origin.
