Purpose of research: Applied research
PFGE is a well established method for typing of foodborne pathogens and has therefore been chosen as the primary molecular typing method for PulsNet Europe. It is already used or in preparation for the molecular surveillance of foodborne infections by most of the partners at the national level. By harmonizing the PFGE-procedures used in the partner labs it is possible to generate data that are comparable between laboratories in the same or in different countries. This way the molecular surveillance will obtain a truly international dimension. The overall objective of the project is thus to lay the foundations for the participation in a network of laboratories that perform highly standardised and discriminatory molecular typing by PFGE of isolates obtained from humans and all links of the food-chain. By comparing the data generated within this network it will possible to detect clusters of geographically dispersed cases fast. Through collaboration with epidemiological networks like EnterNet and /or local epidemiologists is possible to investigate and control national and international outbreaks of foodborne infections efficiently by combining real-time generated bacterial subtyping data from humans and the veterinary and food sources with epidemiological data. This information will be used for additional steps with regard to the health protection of consumers, like more extensive epidemiological investigations, recalls and fastest possible elimination of the source of infection.
