Ecological and economical sustainability through nature conformed forest management

Project

Project code: 22020418
Contract period: 01.09.2019 - 31.08.2022
Budget: 300,921 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: silviculture, locally specific silvicultural cause effect correlation, monitoring plattform

In cooperation with AgroParisTech – ENGREFF and the Association Futaie Irrégulaire (AFI) invented a forest inventory system which is based on random samples as used for the survey of nature conformed managed permanent sample plots throughout Europe. The purpose of the project is to verify and display the effect of nature conformed forest management, as propagated by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Naturgemäße Waldwirtschaft e. V. (ANW), on economic and ecological sustainability. The results should be seen as references for sustainability of the applied cultivation. They can lead to a correction in the way of cultivation if necessary. In countries such as England, France, Austria, the Benelux countries and Ireland these types of sample plots already exist. In Germany the ANW wants to install 3 plots on the most important planting sites and 3 marteloscopes on typical forest communities in addition. These marteloscopes which are going to be installed by the European Forest Institut (EFI) show the simulated economic and ecologic effect caused by different silvicultural treatments. This system allows the training and results can be checked. After the initial survey Forest owners are obliged to allow sequential tests in a 5-10 years regular cycle. ENGREFF intend to edit the collected data. The results are available to the forest owners and anonymized for national and international data pool at the AFI and ANW. The results provide information about the causes and effects of different silvicultural treatments. Plausibility of data is checked by AFI and ENGREFF. National silvicultural interpretation will be managed by ANW and international comparison by Pro Silva Europe.
