Spatia modelling and simulation of mixed forest regeneration controlled by effective silviculture under climate change

Project

Project code: 2218WK08X4
Contract period: 01.07.2019 - 31.12.2022
Budget: 472,689 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: silviculture, climate protection, climate adaptation, forest protection, mixed regeneration, renewable ressources

The overall goal is to develop effective recommendations for silviculture measures to control the mixed regeneration of pine dominated forests located in the North East German Lowlands. Changing climate conditions as well as silvicultural and economic restrictions will be considered. Using a systematic approach to compare empirical data provided by the data base forest (Datenspeicher Wald - DSW) with the results of the project, existing management goals of the project partners in practice will be evaluated, consequences of management scenarios will be simulated, and strategies to miti-gate and adapt the results on changing climatic conditions will be developed. On the same time, effective silviculture measures will be derived to achieve the horizontal and vertical stand structure the partners are targeting for. The project contributes to the development of suitable tools to control and monitor the natural regeneration under different environmental and management scenarios. The project consists in the subprojects "Forest Regeneration", "Modelling And Simulation", and "Synthesis" where all project partners jointly together evaluate the project results, consolidate them, and derive the most reasonable recommendations for the management practice. To achieve these, the following milestones have to be fulfilled: (M1) Selection of all plots and finalisation of the experimental design (December 2018). (M2) Definition of the data structure and joint data storage (January 2019). (M3) Empirical data for the parameterization of the simulation models obtained (January 2020). (M4) Additional simulation experiments to parameterize the forest model (SOEL) by means oft he regeneration model (oak-lay) performed (February 2020). (M5) SOEL parameterization and test, and all SOEL and oak-lay experiments documented in TRACE standard (April 2020). (M6) Report about model applications (SOEL simulations of forest regeneration for climate and silvi-cultural scenarios) sent to all project partners (September 2020). (M7) Silvicultural evaluation of the inventory and modelling results and compilation of a list with adequate management options to initialize a mixed natural regeneration considering climate change scenarios for the model region (June 2020). (M8) Preparation of the project report and scientific publications (December 2020).
