Risk communication, crisis communication and acceptance of plant protection measures in forests as a precondition for sustainable forest management (RiKA)

Project

Project code: 22034918
Contract period: 01.05.2019 - 30.04.2022
Budget: 260,571 Euro
Purpose of research: Public relations
Keywords: plant health, risk assesment, communication, renewable ressources

Aims of the project
To increase understanding and acceptance of the application of necessary measures of plant protection in forests, the project aims at producing tailor-made communication strategies for different target groups as well as developing and implementing suitable media campaigns.
Tasks
To achieve the above mentioned aims, the following tasks will be accomplished: (i) Assessment of the application of selected previous plant protection measures in forests; (ii) Identification of existing strategies and measures of risk communication and crisis communication; (iii) Analysis of information behavior and media usage of selected groups; (iv) Assessment of the specific knowledge of the target groups about plant protection measures and the acceptance of the respective activities in the forest; (v) Development of adequate communication strategies and media campaigns.
Thematic and regional focus
In managed forests, there are two insect species that cause a lot of damage (Ips typographus L. as a typical representative of bark beetles and the Large Pine Weevil Hylobius abietis L.). As measures against these species represent a large share of typical procedures of plant protection in forests, research on the acceptance of those measures allows inferences on other insect pests and facilitates the development of modified solutions. The main target groups are stakeholders on the aggregated level of decision making (e.g. NGOs in the field of nature conservation; other associations; politicians on local and regional level and journalists. These are the groups who are strongly influencing the societal dialogue on plant protection measures in forests. With regard to the regional delineation, two Länder in Germany (Saxony and Brandenburg) have been selected.
