Novel and extended wood pellet characterisation and combustion modelling - part I Fundamental Research (FuturePelletSpec)
Project
Project code: 22020917
Contract period: 01.03.2019
- 28.02.2021
Budget: 695,835 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: wood pellets, fuel properties, renewable ressources
Within the project "FuturePelletSpec" unknown fuel properties of wood pellets that may have a negative impact on the combustion process are investigated in order to identify reasons for previously observed irregular and unpredicted combustion behavior. Based on these results new suggestions for novel wood pellet characterization are developed as input for advanced specification of test fuel requirements or for common fuel standards. The new knowledge will be used for establishing future testing procedures for residential pellet stoves and pellet boilers, procedures will aim at achieving higher repeatability of measurement and avoidance of manipulated test results by optimum fuel choices. Moreover, a new model for the simulation of packed bed combustion shall be developed, which will for the first time also regard transient phases. After the validation of this packed bed model also the gas phase kinetics are integrated in the model in order to simulate the entire combustion process. Using this combined model, varying fuel properties and their impact on the whole combustion process can for the first time be simulated. It can then be used for the investigation and evaluation of different fuel properties and their influence on combustion behavior. The new model will be the connecting link between fuel properties and combustion and it will contribute to the development of fuel flexible and cost-efficient combustion technologies. Based on the results a guideline for the development of low-cost and low-emission pellet combustion technology is developed, it will be robust towards fluctuating pellet fuel quality. Thus the whole sector of pellet boilers and pellet stoves is pushed towards further technological development.
