Improving biodegradation of modified bio-based polymers by employing micocapsulated enzymes
Project
Project code: 22014118
Contract period: 01.03.2019
- 28.02.2020
Budget: 194,092 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: biodegradation, microplastics, polmers, renewable ressources
The project aims to identify ways to improve the biodegradability of polymers and thus offer a solution for reducing plastic waste (especially microplastics). The specific goal of the project is a proof of concept of the reactivation / improvement of the biodegradability of modified biopolymers by the use of suitable enzymes. Model-polymer for the one year preliminary project is cellulose acetate. Enzymes relevant for polymer degradation will be incorporated in immobilized form (embedded in hydrogel) directly into the polymer (coating, film, fiber, etc.) and activated after use of the polymer by a trigger (in the simplest case moisture).
