Collaborative project: Potential of algae-based biolubricant additives: extraction, application and technical properties - from the plant to the technical product (algaebased)

Project

Project code: 22025218
Contract period: 01.04.2019 - 31.03.2022
Budget: 476,205 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Keywords: bio-based lubricant additives, renewable ressources

The overall objective of the project is the substitution of mineral oil-based lubricant additives with algae born constituents. The project aims to identify ingredients from algae, proof and demonstrate their potential for the use as lubricant additives in machining applications. The opportunities of this approach are mineral oil-reduced lubricant application, significant resource conservation and avoidance of the food or fuel conflict. Subproject P2 "Testing and evaluating the environmental risk of the newly developed additives" investigates possible environmental effects of the additives. The extracted compounds are tested concerning to their acute toxicity and microbiological degradability. These results are the basis for the classification. The test methodology is based on OECD standard test procedures and thereby fulfills the criteria for approval according to REACH and GHS. For the first stage of the ecotoxicological evaluation, tests with algae, bacteria and water fleas are planned. Based on the chemical analysis by P3 (CVT) and the degradability by P5 and P7 (HSBRHV, TecMic) further ecotoxicological tests will be conducted, taking into account, e.g., long-term effects or effects on soil organisms. Thus, the project goes beyond the REACH requirements for low production volumes and thus ensures a more reliable forecast of environmental compatibility. Compounds that have undesirable degradability and toxicity properties in the environmental studies will be discarded or modified with respect to target substance or extraction process, in agreement with the project partners P3 (CVT) and P5 (HSBRHV). This ensures the project’s aim to develop additives with ecotoxicologically harmless properties.
