Rearing of European pike perch (Sander lucioperca) under brackish water conditions: Improving sustainability, animal welfare and economy in recirculating aquaculture systems (Brackish water-pikeperch)
Project
Project code: D 237
Contract period: 11.04.2017
- 10.04.2020
Budget: 324,518 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: pike perch, brackish water, NaCl, recirculating aquaculture system, animal welfare, resource savings
The project deals with the breeding of European pike perch (Sander lucioperca) under brackish water conditions in recirculating aquaculture systems. Brackish water describes the same water that is normally used in recirculating aquaculture systems, with the difference that the salinity is slightly increased by the addition of sodium chloride (NaCl). The focus of the project are the expected positive effects of brackish water on pikeperch with the aim of increasing animal welfare and saving resources (water, energy, feed). Basic information were initially obtained on a small-scale trials and then evaluated on a practical scale.
