The overall goal of the project is to improve the cultivation of alfalfa in Germany. It is highly valued as a legume fodder, but there is a need of breeding research. Based on innovative breeding strategies including (I) Determination of genetic diversity using effective genomics tools (II) Development of smart breeding tools (III) Determination of yield and yield quality (IV) Improvement of resistance via direct and indirect treatment of seeds and/or plants with cold atmospheric plasma, attractive alfalfa varieties shall be developed in order to permit their sustainable and ecological utilization as domestic, high-quality animal fodder.
