Production processes

Project code: JKI-PB-08-1313
Contract period: 01.01.2021 - 31.12.2023
Purpose of research: Applied research

Cereals dominate farming in Germany and will retain their importance for the production of healthy food and feed in the future. Particular challenges are posed by environmentally compatible cropping and necessary adaptations in the course of climate change. Due to the economic importance and the repeatedly discussed undesirable discharges of N-fertilizers, the current focus is on wheat, especially baking wheat due to late fertilization to increase the protein content as a value-determining ingredient. On the basis of field trials, but also using samples from suitable lead and practice farms in regions with weather extremes in physiologically decisive growth phases, it will be investigated how differentiated N fertilization affects yield, N balance and essential quality characteristics of different wheat varieties and how drought as well as increased temperatures in particular influence these parameters. Regions of interest from the point of view of weather conditions are identified in real time with the aid of remote sensing measurement methods. The resulting data can be used to develop models that can be used to derive region-specific and weather-adapted recommendations for the management of wheat varieties and qualities and to calculate the resulting N balances.
