Survey and characterization of JKI's collections of arthropod and phytopathogenic microorganisms and viruses with respect to invasive pests of crops under climate change (BioSam)
Project
Project code: JKI-RS-08-3443
Contract period: 01.01.2021
- 31.12.2023
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
With regard to climate change, our crops are increasingly threatened by new and invasive harmful organisms. The decline in insect biodiversity is taking on alarming proportions and is being associated with existing plant cultivation practice. These new challenges for crop production require the development of new crop protection strategies, in particular biological and environmentally friendly measures. To be able to meet these challenges, we plan to develop and optimize methods to characterize and inventory new harmful and beneficial organisms and viruses as well as the existing collections of the JKI. The project will thus achieve two goals: (1) New methods will be developed or adapted to identify and characterize microbial and viral pathogens and pathogen antagonists; (2) New and existing valuable collections at the JKI are characterized across institutes with regard to their genetic resources and managed and documented in a uniform workflow (LIMS). The planned project thus contributes to the following fields of action: plant protection, biodiversity and climate adaptation.IdeMoDeResBar-II provides markers for fast and low-cost breeding in particular for small breeding companies i) to improve the genetic diversity of resistance and ii) to accelerate the transfer of up to date unknown alleles of needed resistance genes to elite barley.
