Expansion of legume cultivation in Germany
Project
Project code: JKI-PB-08-1314
Contract period: 01.01.2021
- 31.12.2023
Purpose of research: Applied research
Current crop rotations in Germany are dominated by cereals. In addition to other leafy crops, legume species are particularly suitable for breaking up these rotations due to their positive effects (e.g. preservation of soil fertility, positive previous crop effect and phytosanitary effects). Although the previous crop effect has been proven in numerous studies, there are serious differences with regard to the level achieved, especially with increased N fertilization, which must be scientifically questioned. Field trials are therefore being conducted to investigate whether high grain yields can be achieved by introducing grain legumes into crop rotations, even with significantly reduced nitrogen inputs. Due to the difficulty in calculating the mineralization of organically bound nitrogen, it will be tested whether increased fall Nmin values result. In addition, legume catch crops or catch crop mixtures are evaluated with regard to previous crop value and ecosystem services (e.g. nitrogen fixation, nitrogen utilization and nitrogen leaching).
