Exposure of foxes to antikoagulant rodenticides in Slovenia (FoSlov)
Project
Project code: JKI-ÖPV-08-1420
Contract period: 01.01.2021
- 01.04.2021
Purpose of research: Networks and research co-ordination
Anticoagulant rodenticides (AK) are subject to authorization in the European Union according to Biocide Regulation (EU) No. 528/2012 .
The 2nd generations AK are so-called PBT substances. They are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic, thus indicating a high environmental risk. For this reason, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) decides all five on a new approval of the AK. For this purpose, all new scientific findings are compiled. The approval is linked to appropriate risk reduction measures. Research into these possibilities and their implementation must be borne by all EU countries. This requires joint efforts in research with other EU countries, which then have a direct impact on the decisions of the ECHA and also on the German approval practice for rodent control. This can only be achieved on the basis of monitoring data that reflect the diversity of European conditions. The analysis of AK in liver samples from foxes addresses the problem of bioaccumulation of anthropogenic substances in the food chain. Knowledge about the consequences on the ecosystem is limited. Foxes as top predators are suitable indicators for this. It is well known that these and other big game species, birds and others do not respect national borders. It is therefore also in Germany's interest to generate basic knowledge for the conservation of European ecosystems together with the Southeast European partner countries.
