Resistance of sugar beet to the invasive γ proteobacterium Ca. Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus and its vector, the reed glass leaf cicada (PENTA-RESIST)
Project
Project code: JKI-OW-08-1226
Contract period: 01.04.2021
- 31.03.2024
Purpose of research: Inventory & Assessment
The project is dedicated to the research and development of methods to control an invasive plant pest. The pathogen Ca. Arsenophonus phytopathogenicus is a new sugar beet disease occurring in Germany. Although it is spread by a native cicada species, little is known about its biology and vector properties. Due to the high potential for damage, agriculture, the sugar industry and seed breeders have a considerable interest in generating basic data on this pathosystem, which are necessary for approaches to control and contain it. Furthermore, it is still open whether other crops, such as strawberries, chard and beetroot, are also threatened and whether an expansion of the damage potential can be expected.
