Project code: TI-WO-08-WO-2021-2443
Contract period: 01.12.2021 - 30.11.2024
Purpose of research: Applied research

The joint project "5G Smart Country" is being implemented in the districts of Wolfenbüttel and Helmstedt. The new and fast mobile radio standard 5G is to be used in the pilot project at four locations in the region (Wolfenbüttel, Dettum/Lucklum and Schickelsheim, Söllingen) in the areas of forestry and agriculture. By using 5G on 700 MHz frequencies via the public network, essential performance parameters of 5G are tested:- Networking of a multitude of sensors and devices (Internet of Things)- Swarm control of autonomous robots and drones (edge architectures)- Simulations and control recommendations for machines (Artificial Intelligence (AI))With its thematic orientation, the project pursues the goal of strengthening the regional value creation of forestry and agriculture through the careful use of resources and thus promoting sustainable nature and climate protection. In the area of forestry, the currently existing methods for recording and evaluating the forest (stand and condition) are being expanded by new types of vitality sensors. This enables the improvement of forest early warning systems, which warn dynamically and in real time of drought damage, pest infestation and fire risk. The 5G data network will transport the data collected from the "individual" tree directly to a platform, the so-called "data lakes". In the agricultural sector, 5G technology is being used to optimise the gentle use of fertilisers and pesticides, among other things.
