Collaborative project: Development of a green façade system to promote biodiversity as part of the urban green infrastructure. The effect of urban landscape, meso- and microclimate as well as green maintenance on biodiversity will be investigated and potentials for the promotion of biodiversity through green facades will be derived - subproject A (BiodivFassade)

Project

Project code: 2818908A20
Contract period: 01.04.2022 - 31.03.2025
Budget: 209,416 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: environment and nature protection, agricultural biodiversity, horticulture, wildlife, urban agriculture, cultivation, biological diversity

The overall objective is to develop and investigate an innovative green facade system to promote biodiversity as part of the urban green infrastructure. The system supports not only a heterogeneous plant composition with changing and high flowering occurrence, but also an increase in structural richness to create vertical, high-quality habitats for selected plant and animal species. Thus, a targeted use of plants in vertical urban spaces is expected to improve the accompanying ecosystem services. The coupled effect of urban landscape, meso- and microclimate as well as green maintenance on the biodiversity of existing facades will be recorded and potentials for supporting a floristic and faunistic biodiversity in urban spaces will be defined. To achieve the project goal, about 20 existing green facades in the Stuttgart region will be analyzed over a period of two years. The main focus of the analysis will be the recording of surrounding urban landscape, meso- and microclimate, green maintenance, and biodiversity. From these surveys, the key factors or "drivers" for promoting biodiversity on green facades will be identified, and an assessment system for characterizing and visualizing urban biodiversity for green facades will be created. Two innovative green façade systems for the promotion of urban biodiversity are derived from the interaction of scientific findings from the results explained above and the experience of HELIX Pflanzensysteme GmbH from practical experience in urban horticulture. The systems will be installed on an approx. 250 m² facade area on the Fraunhofer Campus in Stuttgart-Vaihingen and a suitable green maintenance and control concept will be developed. Finally, the effect as well as the benefit of the system for humans, flora and fauna will be validated.
