The aim of the interdisciplinary research project FoCo-Active is to analyze and address the problem of the 'triple burden of malnutrition' in Tanzania. The FoCo-Active project takes an innovative approach by simultaneously addressing food environments and physical activity spaces, nutrition, consumer behavior, and physical activity/sedentary behavior in urban and rural areas in Tanzania. FoCo-Active plans to identify gaps in health services that promote the three forms of malnutrition. To this end, a tailored intervention program will be implemented with the following components: i) demonstration plots/training for simple production innovations and improved processing technologies to increase year-round availability of nutrient-rich fruits and vegetables (optimizing nutrition environment), ii) market options for healthy and nutrient-rich (plant-based) foods, iii) optimized physical activity spaces, and iv) an educational program to strengthen 'health literacy' within the local population, including specific communication tools. The impact of the implemented interventions will be assessed and documented in order to develop tailored guidelines and disseminate them through appropriate channels.
