In close scientific cooperation between the DBFZ - German Biomass Research Centre, Leipzig and the Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) within the framework of the IRASIL project, this doctoral study will deal with the research of utilization options for agricultural by-products available in large quantities in Iran. In addition to the use of energy, the project focuses on the production of inorganic, silicon-rich framework compounds with a wide range of possible applications. For this purpose, washed rice husks and straw in particular are examined with regard to combustion and gasification behaviour. The integrated and innovative approach makes a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gases (i.e. climate-neutral energy supply), agricultural production efficiency and sustainability (i.e. re-use of by-products), avoiding soil degradation (i.e. biogenic fertilizers) and new transformation processes in agricultural production (i.e. new value chains). For this reason, the present project proposal is of great importance as a first step for the modernization of Iranian agriculture and enables the DBFZ to further advance core research topics within the framework of the 'Smart Biomass Heat' concept.
