The overall aim of the project is to increase efficiency in apple breeding selection through the detection, isolation and development of molecular markers for resistance to early leaf drop. In this way, fruit growers can be offered a broad spectrum of resistant varieties in the future in order to be able to secure the production of domestic apples. The economic prospects of success result from improved selection work using the expected markers. This means that leaf-fall resistant genotypes can be identified just as reliably, but much more quickly and in a more targeted manner than before. Accordingly, these genotypes can quickly move on to the next selection stage and, due to the pre-selection, be subjected to a more intensive recording of characteristics relevant to fruit growing, so that the period until a new variety is registered for variety protection is reduced. Breeders, nurseries, fruit growers and, last but not least, trade and consumers will benefit from the project in the medium and long term. In the long term, the molecular markers developed and validated in this project can be directly integrated into the ongoing selection work of existing and future crossing populations. On the one hand, this enables faster, targeted selection with regard to leaf drop disease, which means that corresponding genotypes can be tested more quickly in orchard performance testing and can thus be registered for variety protection.
