Evaluation of the possibility to breed for resistance against Maedi-Visna Virus-Infections in Rauwolligen Pommerschen Landschafen (Evaluierung der Möglichkeit zur Zucht auf Resistenz gegenüber dem Maedi-Visna-Virus)
Project
Project code: 2821OE013
Contract period: 01.06.2023

Within the framework of this project, breeders of Rauwollige Pommersche Landschafe will be given the opportunity to selectively breed for resistance to clinical diseases caused by the Maedi-Visna virus (MVV) by identifying the genotype standing for susceptibility at position 35 in the TMEM154 gene and subsequently eliminating it by breeding. However, the speed of breeding for resistance to MVV is to be controlled in such a way that the highest possible gene variance remains in the population and, in particular, that all 8 buck lines that are currently still available remain present. On farms that are prepared to carry out these tests, the serological and clinical examinations of the sheep are to be used to determine whether the respective flocks and individual animals are infected with the MVV and clinically ill. This should clarify to what extent a relationship between the resistance gene and the serological or clinical status can also be established in the Rauwollige Pommersche Landschafen.
