Agroforestry systems and hedgerows can greatly contribute to mitigating GHG emissions in agriculture, as tree strips and hedgerows can store carbon in their biomass and increase soil organic. In addition, these systems improve microclimate, reduce wind erosion as well as nutrient leaching, and connect habitats within the agricultural landscapes. To effectively utilize these potentials, we must overcome a lack of experimental data and corresponding evidence to complete the process understanding regarding the interactions between woody perennials and crops. Belowground interactions remain largely unexplored such as the interactions of the soil microbiome. In addition, a lack of planning aids makes it difficult for farmers to convert their farmland to agroforestry systems since an assessment of land suitability prior to establishment is essential due to high establishment costs and long-term commitment. Against this background, KlimAF provides experimental field studies to help improving agroforestry systems and to work out the advantages of these on a site-specific basis. One focus is the investigation of the microbiome, in particular the influence of symbiotic fungi and their impact on nutrient cycling and leaching. In a further sub-project, data and information will be made available on an area-wide basis, mapping the German-wide stock of agroforestry systems and hedgerows and also providing an overview of potential areas of reduced yield. In addition, a web-based decision support system is to be developed, which, based on experimental data from KlimAF, but also existing long-term data, will support and guide future users in their choice of location and design of an agroforestry system. Databases and information platforms created in the project will provide comprehensive information on humus build-up, climate protection through hedgerows and agroforestry in open landscapes to researchers, BMEL, farmers, agricultural advisors and other interested parties.
