Agroecological intensification through agroforestry systems (i.e. species-rich combinations of trees and crops) can concurrently address the global challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss and malnutrition. The aim of the proposed project is to develop, test and promote innovative sustainable horticultural agroforestry systems (arbo-market gardens) in a participatory and transdisciplinary approach in Senegal and Kenya. These arbo-market gardens produce healthy fruits and vegetables in an agroecological and socially acceptable way to diversify diets, transform horticulture into a resilient food system and improve livelihoods, particularly of the youth. In five work packages the project addresses the monitoring of sustainability challenges along selected value chains (WP1); on-station (WP2) and on-farm testing (WP3) of arbo-market gardens with innovative solar-powered and digital technologies to increase productivity while reducing manual labour, production costs and use of agrochemicals; co-learning and training on agroecological practices and innovations (WP4); and coordination and outreach (WP5).
