Establishment of innovative breeding approaches to make sunflower competitive as an oil and protein crop for the German market (ProSun)
Project
Project code: 281D115D21, JKI-RS-08-3464
Contract period: 01.05.2023
- 30.04.2026
Purpose of research: Experimental development
These framework conditions result in the following scientific project objectives for the ProSun project: - Understanding the genetic basis for knowledge-based increase of protein content with sufficiently high oil content, earliness and disease resistance. - Optimization of high-throughput phenotyping and speed breeding in standardized conditions as a basis for increasing and accelerating breeding progress - Establishment of marker-assisted selection tools for targeted selection of individual genes as well as for genome-wide selection in rapid cycles.
At the technical level, the following goals emerge: - Comprehensive characterization of genetic variation for target traits in an extensive and diverse collection of sunflower lines. - Combination of advantageous trait combinations in selected lines - Establishment of precise methods and tools for high-throughput analysis and quantitative evaluation of disease resistance and value-added constituents - Development of models for the prediction of product quality and other agronomic traits based on DNA profiles - Transfer of results into breeding of improved varieties with potential for dual use to improve domestic protein supply - Expansion of the range of crop varieties for sustainable crop production
