The sale of calves from dairy cow farming has not covered costs for years. Livestock traders also transport the young animals over long distances to the fattening farm. In addition to the environmental impact, animal welfare issues must also be viewed critically here. Producer farms are caught in a conflict between animal welfare and profitability. Kalber in Wert setzen in Rheinland-Pfalz (KiWi RLP) first analyzes the marketing channels for calves from dairy farming. From the results, the project partners develop alternatives and steering instruments for the sale and improvement of the added value of calves. In order to achieve cost-covering production, high animal welfare standards in husbandry, regional and resource-saving marketing strategies can be an approach that appeals to consumers. Also up for discussion is whether reducing offspring or crossbreeding with beef breeds can help return value to calves.
