Breeding of spelt grain with potential of triple use in organic farming - Universität Kassel (TRI³ticum)
Project
Project code: 2822OE211
Contract period: 01.04.2024
- 30.04.2028
Budget: 117,870 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: crop production, genetic resources, climate change adaptation, crop production, plant genetic resources, plant breeding, wheat, other cereals
For the aim of 30 % organic farming in 2030 the increasing of land use efficiency is necessary. Furthermore effects of climate change cause risks of yield losses. Thus innovative cultivation or use systems for cropping systems are required, with the substantial support of plant breeding. Innovative breeding strategies should investigate the potential of spelt grains for triple use (whole crop as green cutting; grain and straw) for yield increasing. Therefore in several steps innovative varieties of triple use spelt grains should be developed in this project. The project will be conducted by the breeding company Getreidezüchtung Peter Kunz Deutschland gGmbH (gzpk) and the University of Kassel, dept. of Grassland Sciences and Renewable Plant resources (GNR)
