Digitization and automation of scale analysis at coregoneid fish (ScAn)
Project
Project code: A/23/01
Contract period: 01.05.2023
- 30.04.2024
Budget: 25,030 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
Keywords: oregonid nfish, scale analysis, age determination, digitization, automation
Regular age determination and recording of the growth performance of fish is essential for the sustainable fisheries management of whitefish stocks. The software developed in this project enables an automatic, standardized, reproducible analysis of whitefish scales that is independent of the operator. The main differences between this approach and existing automation systems are that several scales can be analyzed simultaneously and, in addition to age determination, the scale area, length and width as well as the number and spacing of the circuli can be recorded automatically. In addition, the results generated for the individual biometric target variables are visualized and can be validated and corrected semi-automatically using an interactive editing mode. Back-calculations of fish length and weight in different age classes are also possible. The software can therefore make a significant contribution to calibration and standardization in age determination/scale analysis and enables time and cost-saving analysis of large sample sizes.
