Investigations of the abundance of pests and the development of the scab fungus inoculum in a mixed culture of four genetically less related apple varieties
Project
Project code: 2806OE194
Contract period: 15.03.2007
- 31.12.2009
Budget: 45,918 Euro
Purpose of research: Applied research
The triannual project aimed to determine whether and to what extent mixed plantations of different apple cultivars have an effect on the abundance of important plant pests and diseases. Special attention was applied to apple scab. The development of infestation by pests and fungus pathogens was observed via ratings of spider mite (Panonychus ulmi), apple rust mite (Aculus schlechtendali), sawfly (Hoplocampa testudinea), apple canker (Nectria galligena) and apple scab (Venturia inaequalis). Economical dates have been col-lected (crop data, efficiency of fruit pickers, time and effort during pest management and pruning) to give a critical evaluation of the economical characteristics. To investigate the different effects of mixed plantation in comparison to pure plantation, a new mixed-plantation and a pure plantation of four different apple cultivars (´Fuji´, ´Topaz´, ´Elstar´, ´Holsteiner Cox´) has been planted on a fruit farm. Due to young age of the trees, pests and fungus pathogens has not been established in the whole plantation. Statements concerning the influence of a mixed plantation to the development of pests (except the susceptibility of ´Fuji´ to apple scab) will be made in further years. During the three years the efforts concerning pest management and pruning stayed on a low level.
