Collaborative project: New approaches for a genetic improvement of health traits of the dairy cow with a focus on the neo-partus period - Subproject 4
Project
Project code: 2813503908
Contract period: 01.11.2009
- 31.10.2012
Budget: 11,804 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development
Todays dairy cows have reached an enormous production potential and therefore the focus of breeding goals is shifting away from production traits towards health traits that still need genetic improvement. Modern breeding programs could better reflect these conditions if new approaches to record field data would be used more effectively. When recording systems have to be implemented afresh, it has to be evaluated whether the benefits of a new recording system justify the additional costs. The present project pertains to the innovative collection and processing of existing data as well as to an assessment of promising procedures and methods of an extended recording system. The project mainly will focus on health of the dairy cow in the period around the calving since this period is of special physiological importance and this period also is the time when diseases are more frequent.
