Climate change

Project code: vTI-WOI-08-1.3
Contract period: 01.01.1992 - 31.12.2007
Purpose of research: Applied research

The structural changes of forest vegetation coming from underplanting of beeches in pure pine-stands cause extensive changes of the processes running inside the ecosystem. With progressive stage of development of the stand under conversion and with decreasing share of pines the entirety of all running processes converges to a beech-ecology. Considering the specific site conditions of the north-eastern German lowlands (limited precipitation supply about 600mm/year; mostly sandy soils with a low water holding capacity) a shortage of resources-availability in mixed stands compared with pure stands has to be expected. Because of that, climatic sensitivity of pines and beeches, productivity of overstorey-pines and of overstorey- and understorey-beeches in pure stands and in mixed stands as well as their changes in the course of conversion are matter of investigations.
