Response of soil biological and soil chemical parameters of a field soil to atmospheric CO2-enrichment (FACE)
Project
Project code: vTI-BD-08-22
Contract period: 01.03.1998
- 01.12.2009
Purpose of research: Applied research
One goal of the THE BRAUNSCHWEIG CARBON PROJECT (FACE) is, to help to minimize the up to date insufficient knowledge on the global carbon balance under an increased concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Particularly with respect to the C-fluxes in the atmosphere-plant-soil system of cultivated land there are particularly open questions. One aspect of FACE is concerned with the question if the method of isotopic signature (using a lower 13C signal of the applied CO2) can be used for tracing carbon turnover and the residence of C in agroecosystems under normal and increased (550 ppm) atmospheric CO2 conditions. In addition, soil microbial biomass, the fungal:bacterial ratio, and the Cmic:Corg ratio together with soil chemical parameters such as Corg, Nt, C:N, pH will be determined. The planned time-span of this field experiment will be limited to five years; monitoring of the parameters will be done to a great extent in a monthly rhythm. The experimental plots are managed according to local practices. The experimental design includes besides an N-variant with a normal N application (local practice) a variant with 50% N.
