Collaborative project: Development of innovative selection techniques for breeding of drought stress tolerance in winter oilseed rape – Subproject 3

Project

Project code: 2814504510
Contract period: 01.09.2010 - 30.09.2013
Budget: 261,733 Euro
Purpose of research: Experimental development

Breeding of crops for better adaptation to the consequences of climate change requires new tools and techniques for reliable selection of suitable genotypes. The key aims of this project are to develop and trial new selection tools, including Terahertz technology, for determination of drought stress reactions in winter oilseed rape and to use these tools to identify new genetic variation for breeding. In two steps we will perform detailed phenotyping on a set of preselected, eIxtreme genotypes under drought stress in contained experiments and in the field on drought-stress sites. This phenotyping will involve the use of new methods and tools to determine leaf water content and root development under field conditions. In a second step the most effective phenotyping tools will be used to screen a broad genetic diversity set for drought stress reactions in the field. The resulting data will be utilized for association genetic analysis to identify genetic markers for gene loci involved in drought stress tolerance. With the help of these new resources and tools we will also identify genotypes with particularly good drought stress tolerance for use in practical breeding programs.
