Environment and ressource management

Project code: DFG FOR 995
Contract period: 01.01.2008 - 31.12.2010
Purpose of research: Basic research

The project aims to investigate the microbial gene pool involved in nitrogen and carbon turnover, and its induction by abiotic and biotic factors typical for paddy rice soils. Both processes are closely linked and form the basis for an ecological understanding of functionality and evolution of paddy rice soils from ancient time until today. Special attention will be paid to redox-controlled processes during different stages of paddy soil evolution, in relation to microbial transformation of carbon, nitrogen and iron. Besides the DNA, which is a marker for the abundance of genes and reflects a potential for microbial processes, also the mRNA of the corresponding transcripts will be followed to understand under which conditions key enzymes as indicators for specific activities are induced. The focus will be on the terminal processes of nitrogen and carbon mineralization (methanogenesis and denitrification), which are also important parts in the redox chain. Additionally processes which link carbon and nitrogen cycle, like the methane oxidation will be studied. By using stable isotopes the corresponding fluxes can be measured and quantified in lab systems and related to genetic resources and the transcripts.
